Pinehurst, NC
A Donald Ross course.
The course
Pinehurst No. 2 is Donald Ross's most celebrated design, laid out among the longleaf pines and sandy wiregrass of North Carolina's Sandhills. The course is defined by its crowned, turtleback greens, which repel imperfect approaches and reward precise, ground-game golf. A 2011 restoration by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw returned the natural sandy waste areas and firm character of Ross's original vision, and the course has hosted the U.S. Open four times.
Signature hole: The par-4 5th plays uphill to one of Ross's most demanding crowned greens, where anything short of perfect spills off into the surrounding hollows.
