Erin, WI
Designed by Michael Hurdzan, Dana Fry, and Ron Whitten.
The course
Erin Hills occupies 652 acres of rolling, glacier-carved terrain in southeastern Wisconsin, routed to be walked across open, fescue-framed fairways. Opened in 2006, it hosted the 2011 U.S. Amateur and the 2017 U.S. Open, won by Brooks Koepka. The minimalist design leaves the natural land largely intact, with the wind serving as the course's principal defense.
Signature hole: The par-3 ninth plays across a low valley to a green perched on a glacial ridge, with the wind dictating club selection.
